Accelerating the Future of Payments: Thredd and Mastercard, A Partnership Built for What’s Next

Innovation in payments rarely happens in isolation. It happens when technology leaders come together to solve the industry’s biggest challenges and create new opportunities for issuers.

The Thredd Team

Last Updated: July 01, 2025

That’s exactly what Thredd and Mastercard is doing. Our collaboration is bringing the next generation of issuer capabilities to market, giving fintechs, digital banks, embedded finance providers and enterprises the infrastructure they need to innovate faster, scale globally and deliver exceptional customer experiences.

Building the foundations for the next era of issuing

The payments landscape is evolving rapidly. Cloud-native infrastructure, tokenization, AI-powered commerce, digital assets, credit, open banking and multi-rail payments are no longer future concepts, they’re becoming essential capabilities for issuers that want to remain competitive.

At Thredd, we’ve built our AI-first, cloud-native issuer processing platform to support these capabilities from the ground up. Our work with Mastercard demonstrates how modern issuer processors can accelerate innovation while providing the resilience, security and scalability required for global payments.

Rather than enabling one innovation at a time, we’re creating the infrastructure that allows our clients to adopt new technologies as they emerge.

Advancing cloud-native payments infrastructure

Our collaboration with Mastercard spans multiple areas of payments innovation, helping modernize the infrastructure that supports issuer processing.

Through Mastercard Cloud Edge, Thredd has adopted cloud-native connectivity for key payment network interactions, supporting greater resilience, scalability, and operational agility.

This work reflects our shared commitment with Mastercard to advancing next-generation payments infrastructure and accelerating the industry's transition toward cloud-native operating models.

Enabling the future of agentic commerce

One of the most exciting developments in payments is agentic commerce, where AI agents can securely initiate and complete transactions on behalf of consumers.

Working alongside Mastercard and PhotonPay, Thredd’s issuer processing platform supported a live agentic payment milestone, demonstrating that autonomous commerce can operate securely in real-world environments. The transaction was powered by Mastercard Agent Pay, Mastercard's infrastructure for enabling secure, scalable and trusted payments in agentic commerce.

Agent Pay provides the authentication, security and identity-verification capabilities needed for transactions initiated by AI agents, helping establish trust and control for autonomous payments.

Behind every successful transaction are capabilities that consumers rarely see but always depend on, including secure authentication, tokenized credentials, fraud prevention and real-time authorisation. These are the foundations that make trusted AI-driven commerce possible.

Supporting the rise of multi-rail payments

As payments continue to diversify, issuers increasingly need infrastructure that supports multiple payment rails rather than relying solely on traditional card networks.

Thredd’s participation in the Mastercard Crypto Partner Program extends our multi-rail strategy across card payments, bank payments and blockchain-based assets such as stablecoins, giving clients greater flexibility as the payments ecosystem continues to evolve.

Unlocking new commercial payment opportunities

Innovation isn’t limited to consumer payments.

Thredd was also the first issuer processor to enable support for the Mastercard Wholesale Program’s dynamic product code functionality, bringing more flexibility to B2B travel payment and creating opportunities for commercial issuers to expand into new markets.

Helping clients adopt innovation faster

Our work with Mastercard also extends across several additional capabilities that help issuers modernise their proposition, including:

  • Tokenization through Mastercard Digital Enablement Service (MDES)
  • Integrated dispute management with Ethoca Alerts
  • Modern credit issuing capabilities
  • U.S. open banking through Finicity
  • International programme expansion through global passporting

Together, these capabilities reduce complexity for clients looking to introduce new products while maintaining the operational confidence needed to scale globally.

Supporting international growth

One of the greatest challenges facing growing fintechs is expanding into new markets without rebuilding payments infrastructure.

Thredd is therefore working with Mastercard to help its customers scale internationally, supporting expansion into regions including the Americas, Europe and Canada while operating on a single issuer processing platform.

This allows issuers to focus on launching new products and serving customers rather than managing multiple processing environments.

A long-term strategy for innovation

What makes this collaboration particularly significant is its longevity, and strategic breadth.

Thredd and Mastercard are working together across cloud infrastructure, tokenization, commercial payments, digital assets, open banking, credit and emerging technologies such as agentic commerce.

Each initiative builds on the last, creating an increasingly comprehensive platform that enables issuers to adopt new Mastercard capabilities more quickly and bring innovative propositions to market with confidence.

As payments continue to evolve, our focus remains the same: giving issuers the modern infrastructure, global reach and technology partnerships they need to stay ahead of what’s next.

The future of payments won’t be defined by a single innovation. It will be built through collaboration and we’re proud to be helping shape it alongside Mastercard.
